Slots look simple, and honestly they mostly are. A handful of words get thrown around a lot, though, so here is what they actually mean for the free demos you play here.

Reels and rows

The reels are the strips that spin. Most games run five of them, and each one shows a few symbols at a time, so you end up looking at a grid. You spin, the reels stop, the game reads the grid, and that is the loop. The whole game is that loop with better and better art wrapped around it.

Symbols, wilds, and scatters

Regular symbols react when enough of the same kind land together. A wild stands in for regular symbols to help fill a line. A scatter usually counts wherever it lands instead of on a set path, which is why scatters are the ones that light up free spins and bonus rounds. When a bonus kicks off, a scatter almost always did it.

Paylines and ways

A payline is a fixed path across the grid. Line up matching symbols along it and the game responds. Some slots have a set number of lines, like 20 or 40. Volatility
